About Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Leg and knee treatmentOsteopathy was developed approximately 100 years ago as an alternative to the existing medicine of the time. Its principles are based around century-old ideas that the body has an innate ability for self-maintenance and repair, providing its structure, mechanical function, and circulation are normal.

Our aim is to improve the body's function, therefore allowing it to repair itself.

What is osteopathy treatment like?

In this country, treatment is almost entirely manual with the occasional use of ultrasound therapy and TENS machines, depending on the practitioner. We will assess how your body's joints and muscles function and interact.

Treatment itself is usually painless and relaxing, consisting of soft tissue massage, gentle manipulation and articulation of joints and muscles.

Long-term relief

To aid recovery and to prevent recurrence of your problem, most osteopaths will want you to play an active part in managing your condition. This will be in the form of posture work, advice and a sensible exercise regime. We will provide you with all the necessary information.

If it is felt that your condition is not coming from your muscles or skeleton, we may refer you to your GP or a specialist.
